Our First Hike as a Team (March)

When:
Sunday, March 16th

Where: We met at Walt's Grocery Store at the south end of the island near Lynwood Center. We hiked around Gazzam Lake and into the Grand Forest.

Time: 4.5 hours

Miles: 9

Calories burned: 1,780

Weight we carried in our backpacks: 20 lbs. We also wore our mountaineering boots (just the beginnings of breaking them in).

What we learned...
  • We have to practice more uphill climbs and remember to keep a steady pace (thanks Vern!). Slow and steady may not always win the race, but it will sure get you past the finish line!
  • We found the "hot spots" in our mountaineering boots.
  • And we discovered how valuable trekking poles are.

First Achievers:

Eric, scraped his head on a branch. Ouch! We were happy to have a first-aid kit handy.

Our Progress as of March 1st

Well, it has been over 5 weeks since we started the Train to Climb program.

Between the two of us, we have:

Consumed about 19 dozen egg whites
(Quick, do the math... 228 eggs!
Hey, that's almost a gross!).

Purchased almost all of our gear

Trained (with weights) approximately 32 hours

Over 40 hours of cardiovascular training

Rowed over 50,000 meters

Hiked 38+ miles
(twice on Bainbridge Island, once on Mt. Walker)

And this is just the beginning!
